Royal Trucking Co.

The Challenge:

Known for providing a high level of service in handling dry freight and flatbed loads for customers in the southern part of the U.S., Royal Trucking Company operates 250 tractors and 500 trailers from its West Point, MI, headquarters and a terminal in the Atlanta area. A few years ago, however, the carrier realized its on-time delivery record was not up to par.

“Typically, we made deliveries on schedule about 82% of the time,” says Kent Parkinson, the company’s chief information officer. “In other words, 18% of our loads did not arrive on time. We needed to do a much better job identifying when a load is going to be late and let the customer know when we have an issue because something happened on the road.”

Royal also identified a need to more effectively manage its asset maintenance operations. “Fleet maintenance is essential to keeping our trucks generating revenue,” he says. “It was vitality important for us to better understand service issues that need to be addressed so we could return our trucks to the fleet management team as quickly as possible.”

“There’s no question that Trimble has made our company more profitable because we’re able to be proactive in managing our business. As an essential partner, Trimble has repeatedly delivered and keeps getting better.”

The Solution:

Royal Trucking, under Parkinson’s direction, has expanded its use of Trimble solutions to address a full range of operational challenges and opportunities:

  • TMW.Suite transportation management system (TMS) to manage loads and an array of other business processes
  • Trimble hosted services to enhance data security and improve the availability of applications
  • Business intelligence solutions, including Engage.Bid which assists in identifying and capturing profitable loads, to make smart, faster business decisions to drive revenue and efficiency
  • TMT Fleet Maintenance software to reduce asset maintenance costs and improve uptime

The Result:

“There’s no question that Trimble has made our company more profitable because we’re able to be proactive in managing our business,” says the CIO Parkinson, adding,  “As an essential partner, Trimble has repeatedly delivered and keeps getting better.

Using a range of Trimble solutions, Royal quickly improved its on-time delivery rate to 94%. The software is enabling the fleet to continue to improve its ability to deliver loads on time to ensure strong customer satisfaction.

The TMT Fleet Maintenance solution has helped the carrier’s shop facility to more proactively identify and address problems and improve overall efficiency. In conjunction with telematics systems that identify faults as they occur, the company can now route the truck to a service center, get the repair done as quickly as possible, and keep the load moving.

“One of the key things that Trimble has done is to allow us to closely manage assets, reduce costs and make better management decisions. With Trimble products and professional services we can streamline business processes and have a complete value chain in place. I would tell anyone to take a serious look at Trimble as a solution for their complete fleet management system.”
