Landstar Transportation Logistics wins Trimble Ovation Award for maintenance innovation

Congratulations to Landstar Transportation Logistics for winning the 2024 “Rookie of the Year” Trimble Ovation Award! This award honors new Trimble customers who have recently adopted Trimble solutions and achieved exceptional results within the past year.

For more than 35 years, Landstar has established itself as one of the biggest, most reliable transportation providers, serving more than 23,000 businesses around the world. In addition to their robust network of thousands of owner-operators, Landstar manages a fleet of more than 2,700 trucks and trailers and 13,600 vans.

Landstar works closely with TravelCenters of America to provide maintenance and service to both their fleet and network of owner operators, but given the size of their operation, Landstar was struggling to keep maintenance and compliance organized. And the homegrown asset maintenance software and servers Landstar depended on were becoming too costly to upkeep. So, they turned to Trimble TMT Fleet Maintenance to help transform their operation and overcome these challenges.

The Challenge

Asset maintenance is a neverending endeavor, and over their decades of operation, Landstar’s team, in conjunction with TravelCenters of America, has repaired countless vehicles. But as the business has continued to grow, they found the maintenance system they built could no longer keep up with demand.

“The main challenge was managing complexity with in-house systems,” said Tucker Phillips, VP of Trailer Management at Landstar.

To manage their repair schedules, inspections, technician information, parts and communicate with TravelCenters of America's shops and technicians, Landstar relied on in-house asset maintenance software built by their team. This approach required tedious manual data entry, multiple disconnected systems and high costs to maintain servers and development.

Managing the relationship between Landstar staff and the company’s maintenance network of third-party service providers meant technicians had to juggle two systems to track inspections, repairs and expenses.

Landstar needed a smarter, faster, more streamlined solution that could:

    • Track inspections for owner-operator and company-owned equipment.
    • Ensure compliance with scheduled 120-day inspections.
    • Reduce paperwork processing time and minimize manual data entry.
    • Seamlessly integrate with third-party vendors to simplify invoicing and approvals.

The Results

With TMT Fleet Maintenance, Landstar gained a cloud-based, fully integrated system that eliminates inefficiencies and enhances visibility into repairs, inspections, and costs. Since implementing TMT, Landstar has seen remarkable improvements.

For example, Landstar received over 13,000 vendor repair orders in August of 2023 alone, with 3,000 automatically generated. Through the streamlined integration between TMT Fleet Maintenance and TravelCenters of America's system, Landstar's team no longer had to manually input an order multiple times across different systems.

As a result, maintenance requests have been processed in a fraction of the time it would have taken before. Landstar estimates they've saved more than 250 hours per month on paperwork processing and thousands of IT hours by eliminating the need to maintain in-house servers.

“TMT Fleet Maintenance has transformed the way we manage maintenance, making it easier, faster, and more cost-effective,” said Phillips. “By integrating TMT with our vendors, we’ve significantly reduced manual data entry, improved accuracy and ensured seamless repair tracking across our fleet.”

The collaborative partnership between Landstar, Trimble and TravelCenters of America has not only enhanced Landstar’s operations but has also improved the relationship between Landstar's team and its counterpart at TravelCenters of America. By simplifying workflows and automating repair tracking, Landstar has set a new standard for fleet maintenance efficiency.

"By integrating TMT, our shop and customers benefit from more accurate invoices, faster paperwork processing time, and more easily managed estimates, approvals and final invoice processing," added Phillips. "Everybody benefits when we simplify and automate workflows. Now our team (and every customer) will benefit from a streamlined, intuitive interface, which has been exhaustively tested to handle whatever we throw at it!"
