Ocean State Job Lot Recognized as a 2023 Trimble Ovation Award Winner

As we announced last year, a number of Trimble’s transportation and logistics customers were recognized in our 2023 Ovation Awards for their innovation and industry leadership. And with those awards, we had the opportunity to speak with some of the winners to discuss their business and how they’re growing toward the future.

Among those customers, Ocean State Job Lot was honored with a win in the category of “Safety Superteam: Best in Advancing Safety.” This award salutes organizations that have achieved improvement in overall safety by reducing accidents and improving operations to make the roads safer for everyone. 

Ocean State Job Lot was founded in 1977 and has grown to be the northeastern US’s largest, privately held closeout retail chain with 150 stores in New England, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Their fleet is comprised of hundreds of vehicles, and as business continued to grow, safety became a more complex challenge to manage. 

They first implemented a wide-ranging safety strategy, created their first Transportation Safety Manager position and team, and then sought out and installed Trimble’s Video Intelligence solution to keep their drivers and assets safe on the road. To bring all of these initiatives together, Ocean State Job Lot implemented a data-driven safety program, called the “Zero & Zero Safety Campaign,” that produced actionable guidance in response to analysis of driving behavior and incidents on the road. The program ultimately brought the rate of incidents down dramatically and improved overall fleet performance.

Ocean State Job Lot representative, Jeff Smith, remarked upon winning the award for safety, “We have successfully built not only safety standards, but a safety culture in which significant positive progress has resulted in fewer incidents, increased driver morale and an ongoing commitment to driver safety and awareness.”
