Operation Safe Driver Week 2016

Operation Safe Driver Week 2016

Operation Safe Driver Week, sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), kicks off next week, October 16-22, 2016. This annual initiative to heighten traffic safety enforcement and education aligns with PeopleNet’s mission to make roads safer.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, there were 3,660 deaths in crashes involving large trucks in 2014 alone. CVSA seeks to reduce the number of crashes, deaths and injuries by improving drivers’ behavior on the roads. During Operation Safe Driver Week, law enforcement agencies will be tracking unsafe driving behaviors such as speeding, failure to use a seat belt, distracted driving, improper lane change, and many more. In 2015, the CVSA found that passenger vehicles speed significantly more than commercial motor vehicles (CMV); out of the 21,012 drivers pulled over during the 2015 Operation Safe Driver Week, passenger-vehicle drivers sped 27.3% of the time versus CMV drivers who sped 9.3% of the time. Agencies will be holding educational events across North America throughout the week – contact the agency/department for your area to see what is planned for your area.
